Every time she'd go to the h...My mom was a DNR. Every time she'd go to the hospital, I'd be assaulted by that giant red bracelet. I understood. She was old, unhealthy, done. I was health care POA and did as she wished. But I couldn't help but feel a little abandoned. <br /><br />She also had a powerful stench. If I ever smell like that, I'll know the end is near. But I'll get off my chair, and I'll definitely watch out for maggots. Don't you just want to slap them silly?<br /><br />And the empathy that catches you, no matter how professional and detached you try to be, is exactly the reason I did not go on in my graduate training as a therapist. For me it was impossible to keep that emotional distance.
